Parnell’s also integrates three elements of rhetoric: logos, ethos, and pathos. She builds her logos with the statement “What is social media doing to me? That was only four days and it was anxiety-inducing, it was stressful and it resulted in withdrawals” (2.03). “We spent on average two hours a day there” (3.31). These statements attract the audience's experience because on this day, it is difficult to escape from social media. Opening up social media seems to be something that everybody must do these days. In the speech, she also mentions expert research from The Canadian Association of Mental Health (10.08) “...grades 7-12 students who spent over 2 hours on social media reported higher depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts” and “I worked in social marketing primarily in higher education. That means I work with a lot of 18-24 years olds, which also happens to be the most active demographic on social media” (2.24). All these said shows the ethos and credibility of the speaker, which she included references and work's experience in her speech. “...we are already experiencing... with every like, you get a shot that feel-good chemical, dopamine” (9.25). This is for the pathos, she provides a case that we often experience in using social media, where this will bind the emotions of the audience who feel the same way. It is undeniable that getting a large amount of likes makes us happy. We'd like to keep uploading photos. A unique phenomenon that I often find on the social media platform Instagram is when my friends choose a specific time to post images in order to receive a large amount of likes.
During the speech, she always provides a clear topic sentence to describe what will be explained next, such as “When social media use goes unconfronted overtime, that’s when we see the rising levels of anxiety and depression” (9.54). Parnell also makes flashy statements that we sometimes don't even notice. “When we talk about this dark side of social media, what we really talk about is the dark side of people” (11.17). This statement creates a serious bond with the audience when we open social media and look at people’s highlight reel and compare them to our lives. Or when we don't get many likes, we'll take down our posts. It has a long-term effect on our perceptions of social media.
In delivering her speech, she has good body language and maintains a relaxed gesture. Not much movement was made during the speech. The volume, pause, and intonation of the voice are all properly controlled. She also uses PowerPoint to assist her in conveying her statement to the audience. Parnell's speech was overall very professional, with a relaxed speaking style. And there’s no points that were missed or difficult to understand.

BalasHapusHello Andin! Thank you for sharing this amazing topic. I really like your explanation about this. I agree with the discussion that social media can also have an impact on a person's mental health. I think this topic is really important too. We have to pay attention about this. I want to ask, have you ever had your own experience like feeling anxiety or maybe insecure seeing social media? How do you handle it? Because it is very important for mental health. Thank you ^_^
BalasHapusHi Zulfa! Thanks for visiting my blog^^. That’s a nice question by the way. Well, as a human being of course I have felt anxiety, insecurity, worthlessness, and other negative emotions. I believe it is common for us to compare our lives to the achievements or possessions of other people in social media. When I get that feeling, I prefer to avoid opening social media for a while. I'm trying to remember the amazing things that have happened to me and being grateful for what we have right now. I believe it is something that can be done to keep my mental health and maybe you can try my tips :D
HapusHello Andin! Thank you for bringing up this amazing topic! I leaned a lot from your blog actually:) I also totally agree with your opinion that usually someone choose a specific time to post images in order to receive a large amount of likes. I also happened to my friend. Have you ever felt bored with social media? If so, what did you do to get rid of that boredom? Thank you! xoxo.
BalasHapusHi Yuniar! Thank you for visiting my blog :D. It’s a great question! To be honest, I can't seem to get away from social media. I always open it from the moment I wake up until I go to bed. But I get bored sometimes because I see things that aren't real. So, in order to resolve this, I try engaging in enjoyable activities in real life, such as reading novels, painting, or engaging in other activities that I enjoy. I think that those activities can relieve my boredom of social media. ^_^

BalasHapusA Fantastic topic Andin! It is a matter that is getting attention in our society about mental health. Here I want to ask: We know that social media has a bad effect on our mental health but we can’t avoid that it also benefits our life, so how do you deal with it? Thank you :D
Hi Tiara! Thanks for visiting my blog. It’s such a good question anyway. Yes, I agree with you, while social media has a negative impact, it is also necessary for us to communicate with others. For the time being, I'm sticking to social media. I set a daily time limit of about 2 and a half hours for social media like instagram and Twitter. Sometimes we feel insecure at times because we see other people's great achievements, don't we? To avoid this, I usually remember the amazing things that have happened to me and I am grateful for what I have now. Just stay focused for our life! :D
HapusHello, Andin! This is such a great topic, thank you! In our society now people don't realize that social media can has some negative effects on our mental health. Many people compete with each other to be more than the others in front of the screen. I had this time when my social media become toxic and it was exhausting for me even before I open the application. Then I decided to take a rest for a couple days to calm myself down. Have you ever feel tired or maybe anxious looking at your own social media, Andin? Thank you. :D
BalasHapusHi Hani! Thank you for visiting my blog and asking a great question^^. Of course, I've experienced all of those feelings. Tired, nervous, and insecure. It happens as a consequence of seeing too many good 'highlights' from other people. Like our friends who oftenly go on vacation, having a perfect body or face shape, getting good achievements, and so on. When I felt that toxic feeling, I took a moment to scroll through social media and try out some new things in real life.
