Fun Learning English through Movies

A movie is a collection of moving images that tells a story and is watched on a screen or television by the viewers. Many people, including me, enjoy watching movies. I love watching action, science fiction, romance, or comedy genre films. This activity not only provides excitement, but it also has a great deal of value. I am someone who likes to watch movies or drama series. Through movies, I learn many things. A moral value must be presented in the film. It taught me valuable lessons about life. Whether it's the resemblance of hardships experienced by characters that have similarities with my life that of course inspires me. Alternatively, we can appreciate works of art by watching movies. When we watch movies, we must often be amazed. For example, we may be impressed by the actor's performance, the setting, the cinematography, or other elements. It appears simple, yet it has a significant influence, particularly on film makers. Watching movies also contributes to improving my English skills. According to Mulyadi & Mutmainnah (2015), movies with the same subtitles that match what the actors and actresses say can help enhance listening skills and expand vocabulary.

I have an idea of using a movie to play a game for the classroom. This activity is designed for junior highschool students in 9th grade. Speaking is a skill that may be improved in this game. Here are the steps to play the game :

  1. The teacher instructs the students to watch any movie they really like during the first week

  2. In the next week, the class is divided into several groups

  3. Each group will be handed two dice and template paper

  4. These are 9 boxes with questions on the template paper

  5. Each student will take a turn rolling the dice and answering the questions

  6. Students are required to answer the questions and speak in front of their group.

This game has various benefits for students who want to improve their English skills, one of them is speaking. Students must answer the questions in English. From this, students will be trained to be confident to speak English in the classroom. Games are effective to increase motivation, to lower students’ stress, and to give language learners the opportunity for real communication (Maulana, 2019). Students can learn to speak more effectively in English by playing games. Games can provoke students’ interaction between students to another student and also students to the teacher because communication derives essentially from interaction (Ulviana, 2011). Because the speaking skills of Indonesian junior high school students is still low, it is expected that by playing this game in groups, students will be more motivated and interested in speaking English.
