Research Argument : Mental Health Awareness in College

Mental health important in our life. Although we cannot see it directly, mental health awareness must be a concern nowadays, such as in college.  What is being told by the authors of those articles at references below are The Importance of Promoting Mental Health in Universities. As I know, college has crucial role for student's development. They can find their potential, connected to their friends and also gain a lot of knowledge. The campus is one of the place where mental health awareness must be at that the all high.

Campus is a great place for students to experience freedom and make choices that will have a profound effect on their lives. There are reports of mental health issues affecting students face in campus which the campus must solve. depression and anxiety are the most commonly reported mental illnesses, eating disorders, substance abuse, and self-injury are close behind. The most commonly reported mental illnesses are depression and anxiety, followed by eating disorders, drug issue, and self-injury (Holterman Ally 2018). Some students did not want to go to college because their mental health issues were not being well managed. Untreated mental illness has an effect on academic performance, productivity, substance abuse, and relationships. As a result of those problem, the campus must recognize the importance of mental health and provide treatment to students who are suffering from mental illnesses. In a Spring 2014 National College Health Assessment, 33 percent of students surveyed reported feeling so depressed within the previous 12 months that it was difficult to function. Almost 55 percent reported feeling overwhelming anxiety, while 87 percent reported feeling overwhelmed by their responsibilities and almost 9 percent seriously considered suicide over the past year. Based on the percentage of data, mental health awareness on campus needs to be raised. To be aware of the early signs of mental illness, everybody must be involved. Helping a friend, for example, may be a good first step to dealing this situation. Counseling center must be available on campus to assist students who are suffering from mental illness. Many people believe that we should be happy and that we should not feel our negative emotions because it makes others uncomfortable. I think that people don't know how to cope their negative emotions, which leads to a vicious cycle wherein people attempt to hide their emotions and don't know how to process them. Mental health is just as important as physical health. More students are seeking professional help. There is a need for more mental health education and discussions on campus. It has the power to influence students to live more positively.

In my opinion, the aim of writing those articles is to emphasize the importance of pay more attention to mental health, mental illness as well as how those factors affect the students on the campus. Many people still believe that mental illnesses are uncommon and there is misunderstood that people with mental health are weak. Those articles changed our perspective on mental health problems. The authors have effectively conveyed their points of view, which they intended to share with the readers. In my opinion, the authors made those based on their personal views and experiences in real-life situations. Those articles are well-written and provide a lot of evidence to substantiate the author's argument.

"Mental health needs a great deal of attention. It's the final taboo and it needs to be faced and deal with."

    1. Thank you for asking the question Yuniar! I really appreciate it. Yup, I've had to deal with friends who show signs of mental illness. Also I had to deal with my best friend who was on the point of committing suicide :( Actually, the most important thing that we can do is to be 'sensitive' to those around us. We need to know if any of our friends' personalities have changed. We can start to be good listener. Ask if our friend just want to be heard or if he/she want some advice. Sometimes, I also give affirmations to my friends who are going through a tough time to raise their spirits.
Don’t forget to start with simple things to care about the mental health of others! :D

    1. Hello Tiara! Such a good question and thank you for asking anyway. Well, to be honest, as a normal student I often feel some symptoms of mental illness for several reasons. But I don’t think that I have a serious mental health problems, because I can still do the activities normally without too much difficulty. I always try to maintain my mental health and I hope you do as well :)

    1. Hello there! Thank you for a good question. It's sad because mental illness is still considered taboo in our society. But we can be a guiding force to make society more concerned with mental health. Absolutely yes, I am only an ordinary human who has limits. As a student, I must have felt some symptoms of mental illness such as overthinking, anxious, or depression. Most of the factors that influenced me was because I was afraid that I could not catch up on time. But, I also have to make changes. Usually, to avoid stress, I make a priority scale. Which are important activities that must be carried out immediately, which activities can be postponed, and which are also activities that must be avoided. I also do various activities that makes me feel good, such as workout, writing, reading, or talking with close friends. Perhaps you can do the same thing to prevent stress and other issues^^

  6. Hello, Andin! Thank you for the amazing writing. I totally agree with you that mental illness are still need more awareness in our society especially in education environtment such as university. A lot of university students suffers from mental illness. I'm interested and totally agree with you that the university should provide some counseling session for the students who needs it. But some people are still thinking that mental illness are taboo and they tend to avoid this kind of thought or topic in conversation. So, even there are some counseling sessions provided, students still feel shy or embarrassed to go there just because they don't want the society judge them. So I want to ask your opinion about this, what do you think if the students feel embarrassed to get some counseling session and what suggestion would you give to your friend if they feel shy to go? Thank you, I hope you have a nice day!

    1. Hi Hani! Wow, what a good question! Yeah, there is still a stigma problem in our society. Many people still believe that mental disorder is caused by a lack of worship, a seeking for attention, or other factors. It's sad fact, this causes people who are mentally ill don’t want to express how they feel, they don’t want to get counseling. In reality, having a mental disorder is not something to be ashamed of. If this is allowed to continue, it can be dangerous. Like a physical illness. For that, we must make changes on campus to not judge people who have mental illnesses. We need to build a sense of "safe" in the campus area so that people with mental illnesses can get well treatment. I personally, will give some affirmations to friends to get counseling as soon as possible so that he/she will know the real condition. Even if they still feel embarrassed, maybe campus can make some kind of online consultation. They can fill in the google form and tell how they feel on it.
